Seismic Upgrading of Existing Steel Buildings Built on Soft Soil Using Passive Damping Systems

چکیده

In regions prone to seismic activity, buildings constructed on soft soil pose a significant concern due their inferior performance. This situation often results in considerable structural damage, substantial economic loss, and increased risk human life. To address this problem, study focuses the retrofitting of steel moment-resisting frames using friction metal-yielding dampers, taking into account soil-structure interaction. The effectiveness these retrofit methods was examined through comprehensive non-linear time history analysis three prototype structures subjected series intense events. behavior simulated Bouc-Wen hysteresis model. Various parameters, including lateral displacement, maximum drift ratio, pattern plastic hinge formation, base shear distribution, dissipated hysteretic energy, were used compare performance two strategies. findings from analyses revealed that both markedly enhanced safety serviceability deficient buildings. retrofitted exhibited notable reductions residual displacements inter-story compared original frame structures. frame, primary elements absorbed amount input energy deformation. However, frames, dampers up 90% total energy. Additionally, integrating effectively transferred response dampers.

Effect of Damping and Yielding on the Seismic Response of 3D Steel Buildings with PMRF

The effect of viscous damping and yielding, on the reduction of the seismic responses of steel buildings modeled as three-dimensional (3D) complex multidegree of freedom (MDOF) systems, is studied. The reduction produced by damping may be larger or smaller than that of yielding. This reduction can significantly vary from one structural idealization to another and is smaller for global than for ...

Full and Perforated Metal Plate Shear Walls as Bracing Systems for Seismic Upgrading of Existing Rc Buildings

Metal Plate Shear Walls (MPSWs) represent an effective, practical and economical system for the seismic protection of existing RC framed buildings. They consist of one or more metallic thin plates, bolted or welded to a stiff steel frame, which are installed in the bays of RC framed structures. A case study of an existing RC residential 5-storey building, designed between the ‘60s and ‘70s of t...

seismic upgrading of non-ductile steel frames using steel plate shear walls

many old damaged and undamaged building structures do not meet the criteria of modern seismic design codes. such structures need to be seismically enhanced. the main objective of this paper is to propose and validate the effectiveness of an upgrade scheme for non-seismic buildings using steel plate shear walls (spsw). the upgrade is carried out considering a probability-based drift-based criter...
